Most machining applications require the MWF to be sprayed onto the machined part to offer boundary lubrication and cooling Also, MWF’s protect parts against corrosion and assist with the removal of chips. The process results in a proportion of the spray from the MWF to become airborne as a mist. This potentially presents a health and safety concern which is a major challenge for industry.
An unavoidable contaminant in a MWF that contributes to misting is tramp oil resulting from hydraulic leaks and slideway oils. Studies have proven that mist generation increases approximately linearly with tramp oil.
Emulsifiers contained in oil based MWF allow tramp oil to emulsify with the MWF potentially increasing the risk for bacteria to develop. Zinc additives in tramp oil can release sulphur and phosphorous compounds which are food for bacteria thereby increasing the growth of microorganisms.
Process Treatments have developed a range of fully synthetic cutting fluids that are designed to be recycled thereby reducing disposal costs, usage and expensive machine down time.
To reduce misting levels containing oil particulates, the synthetic range does not contain emulsifiers thereby totally rejecting tramp oil to the surface of the MWF which can easily be removed using a simple belt skimmer.
