Process Treatments has been granted a UK Patent for a Metalworking Fluid Decontamination Unit (MWFDU) with Patent Filings for the EU, USA Canada and Australia. The system has proven to be a non-invasive method of reducing bacteria levels and particulates from fully synthetic metalworking fluids in the factory. This comes at a time of increasing environmental pressures on industry to reduce wastage compounded with changes to the Biocide Directive.
Metal working fluids deteriorate mainly due to microbial contaminants and the current practice to deal with this problem is to either renew the fluid or use tank side biocides. With anticipated restrictions placed on the use of certain biocides in cutting fluids, there are concerns on whether alternative biocides will offer the same level of protection which may lead to users adding more tank side additives to the machine coolant or machines cleaned out more frequently. The latter will increase production and down time costs not forgetting the impact on the environment as disposal costs will increase. The other concern is that machines may not be cleaned out risking the health of machine operators.
The MWFDU provides an effective method to disinfect fully synthetic metal working/cleaning fluids with trials showing a reduction from 10Log6 CFU/ml to 10Log3 CFU/ml which is a reduction in bacteria of 99.9%.
